STOP MOSS & ALGAE FROM TAKING OVER YOUR ROOF!

Professional Roof Cleaning Followed by Zinc or Copper Ridge Protection

Why New England Roofs Need Attention

New England Roofs & Biological Growth

New England roofs are exposed to moisture, shade, and changing weather conditions that encourage moss, algae, and lichen to grow. Moss can hold moisture against roof surfaces and may contribute to premature deterioration.

ABCC Services removes unwanted roof growth using cleaning techniques appropriate for the roof material. After cleaning, we can install zinc or copper strips near the ridge to help reduce future moss and algae growth.

Stage 1 — Before

Moss, Algae & Lichen Buildup

Over time, New England's wet climate allows moss, algae, lichen, and black algae staining to accumulate on roof shingles. This biological growth holds moisture against the surface and can contribute to premature wear.

Stage 2 — After Cleaning

Roof Cleaned & Restored

Using cleaning methods appropriate for the roofing material, ABCC Services removes moss, algae, lichen, and staining. The roof surface is cleared before any protective metal strips are installed.

Stage 3 — Zinc Protection

Zinc Strip Installation

Silver-gray zinc strips are installed near the roof ridge. When rainwater flows over the strips, it carries trace zinc ions down over portions of the shingles below, helping inhibit moss and algae regrowth.

Stage 4 — Copper Protection

Copper Strip Installation

Copper strips are installed near the roof ridge as an alternative to zinc. Rainwater flowing across the copper carries trace copper ions over portions of the roof below, helping discourage moss and algae from returning.

The Science

How Zinc & Copper Ridge Protection Works

How Zinc Works

When rainwater flows over zinc strips, small amounts of zinc are carried over portions of the shingles below. This helps inhibit moss and algae growth and may slow their return.

How Copper Works

Copper works in a similar way. Rainwater flowing across copper strips carries trace amounts of copper over portions of the roof below, helping discourage moss and algae regrowth.

Why Install at the Ridge?

Installing the metal near the roof ridge allows rainfall to carry protective metal ions down the roof slope. Coverage varies with rainfall, roof pitch, roof length, and roof design.

Important Notice

Zinc and copper strips help reduce regrowth, but neither guarantees that moss, mildew, lichen, or algae will never return. Results vary, and periodic roof maintenance may still be necessary. Install products according to the roofing manufacturer's requirements.
