Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1

How often should I have my gutters cleaned?

Accepted Answer

Most homes in Greater Boston and Southern NH should have gutters cleaned at least twice a year — once in late spring after tree pollen and seeds fall, and once in late fall after the leaves drop. Homes with overhanging trees or pine trees may need cleaning three or four times a year. Clogged gutters lead to water damage, foundation problems, and ice dams in winter.

Question 2

What causes moss and algae to grow on my roof?

Accepted Answer

Moss, algae, and lichen thrive in shaded, moist conditions — exactly what New England roofs experience. North-facing slopes, areas under tree canopy, and roofs that stay damp longer are most susceptible. Once established, moss and algae trap moisture against shingles, accelerating deterioration and shortening roof life. Regular cleaning and preventive zinc or copper strip installation are the best defenses.

Question 3

Is pressure washing safe for my roof?

Accepted Answer

High-pressure washing is NOT recommended for asphalt shingle roofs — it can strip granules, void warranties, and cause premature failure. ABCC Services uses soft-wash techniques for roof cleaning: low-pressure application of biodegradable cleaning solutions that kill moss, algae, and lichen at the root without damaging shingles. This is the industry-recommended method for safe, effective roof cleaning.

Question 4

How do zinc and copper strips prevent roof moss?

Accepted Answer

Zinc and copper are naturally toxic to moss, algae, and lichen. When installed along the roof ridge, rainwater washes trace amounts of metal ions down the roof surface, creating an environment where organic growth cannot survive. Zinc strips are the most cost-effective option; copper strips last longer and are more effective. Both provide years of protection after a single installation.

Accepted Answer

ABCC Services serves Greater Boston, Middlesex County MA, and Southern NH — including Lowell, Chelmsford, Billerica, Tewksbury, Dracut, Andover, Methuen, Lawrence, Haverhill, Wilmington, Burlington, and many more Massachusetts communities, as well as Nashua, Salem, Hudson, Merrimack, Milford, Amherst, Pelham, Windham, and Derry in New Hampshire.

Question 7

How long does a gutter cleaning take?

Accepted Answer

A typical gutter cleaning for an average-sized home takes 1–3 hours depending on the size of the home, the number of linear feet of gutter, and how clogged they are. We clean all gutters and downspouts, flush them to verify proper flow, and remove all debris from the property.

Question 8

What is chimney repointing and when is it needed?

Accepted Answer

Repointing (also called tuckpointing) is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from between chimney bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. It's needed when mortar joints become cracked, crumbling, or recessed — typically every 20–30 years in New England climates. Failing mortar allows water to penetrate the chimney, leading to interior water damage, freeze-thaw spalling, and structural deterioration.

Question 9

How do I know if my chimney liner needs replacement?

Accepted Answer

Signs that a chimney liner may need replacement include visible cracks or deterioration in the flue, a strong smoke smell in the house when using the fireplace, carbon monoxide detector alerts, or a chimney inspection report noting liner damage. Stainless steel liner installation is required when converting from oil to gas heat, when adding a wood stove insert, or when the existing clay tile liner is cracked or missing sections.

Question 10

What is the best time of year to have my roof cleaned?

Accepted Answer

Late spring through early fall is the ideal time for roof cleaning in New England — warm, dry weather helps the cleaning solution work effectively and allows the roof to dry quickly. However, ABCC Services can clean roofs in most weather conditions. Fall cleaning before winter is particularly valuable, as it removes moss and debris that would otherwise trap moisture and ice against shingles.

Question 11

Can you clean vinyl siding without damaging it?

Accepted Answer

Yes. ABCC Services uses appropriate pressure and cleaning solutions specifically formulated for vinyl siding. We avoid high-pressure washing that can force water behind siding panels or damage seams. Our soft-wash approach removes mold, mildew, algae, and dirt effectively while protecting your siding's finish and integrity.

Question 12

How long does paver patio installation take?

Accepted Answer

A typical paver patio installation takes 3–7 days depending on size and complexity. This includes excavation, base preparation (the most critical step for long-term durability), paver installation, edging, and polymeric sand jointing. Proper base preparation — typically 6–8 inches of compacted gravel — is what separates a patio that lasts decades from one that shifts and settles within a few years.

Question 13
